These are the first hybrid RTG cranes acquired in Europe and they reduce fossil fuel consumption by 40%.
Bilbao, November 29, 2023. Representatives from various institutions and companies in the logistics community linked to the Port of Bilbao and its hinterland participated this morning in the inauguration ceremony of the six new eco-efficient hybrid RTGs acquired by CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal as part of an ambitious plan to renew 30% of its yard machinery.
In addition to reducing fossil fuel consumption by 40%, the new equipment confirms the commitment to new technologies and represents a significant advance in energy efficiency and environmental protection. It will also bring a notable increase in worker safety and productivity, with the consequent optimization of operations on ships, trucks, and trains—a clear hallmark of CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal’s intermodal focus.
This acquisition is part of the company’s investment plan, which has allocated more than 34.5 million euros over the last eight years to modernizing facilities and renewing machinery, demonstrating the firm commitment of the company’s shareholders to the port of Bilbao as a major strategic center in the Atlantic Arc.
The event, chaired by Arantxa Tapia, Councillor for Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment; included speeches by Ricardo Barkala, President of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Ken Chan, CEO of CSP Spain, and Elvira Gallego, Terminal Manager.
Technical characteristics
The six new RTGs are wheeled overhead cranes with structures weighing 135 tons. Their main features are: a lifting capacity of 41 tons, 51 tons under exceptional load conditions, a lifting height of up to 18.1m (5+1 containers), clearance between legs for six containers, and truck access.
These are environmentally friendly devices, featuring advanced lithium-ion battery technology and a power management system that monitors the charge level and overall condition of the batteries, with an eco-efficient diesel engine that charges the batteries when needed.
