  • The 5 new RTGs, valued at €10.5M, are part of the Investment Plan that CSP Iberian Valencia Terminal plans to undertake in the next five years (2023-2027) for more than €120M, a firm commitment by the CSP Spain group to the port of Valencia
  • The entry into service is planned for next October and, together with those received last week at the Bilbao Terminal of the CSP Group, they will be the first hybrid RTGs to operate in Europe.

Valencia, August 16, 2023. The Valencia terminal of the CSP Spain Group has successfully completed the delivery and unloading of the components and structures for five new hybrid RTG cranes. Assembly will take place over the next few months, and the cranes are scheduled to enter service next October. This new machinery is part of the group’s investment plan for the Valencia terminal and aims to achieve both environmental and operational improvements.

The acquisition of the new machinery represents an investment of €10.5 million, and is one of the actions included in the investment plan for the next five years (2023-2027), which will exceed €120 million. The objective of the yard machinery renewal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which will lead to a 40% decrease in fossil fuel consumption. Furthermore, in terms of productivity, receiving and delivery operations will be improved at both the maritime and rail terminals.

The cranes have been unloaded from the vessel Schillplate, which had previously unloaded six RTGs at the port of Bilbao. In total, the CSP Group has acquired 11 units for its terminals in Valencia and Bilbao. These are the first RTG cranes of this type to operate in Europe.

These are rubber-tired gantry cranes with 135-ton structures. Their main features include: a lifting capacity of 41 tons, 51 tons under exceptional load conditions, a lifting height of up to 18.1 meters (5+1 containers), a clearance between legs for 6 containers, and truck access. They are equipped with integrated Siemens controls by Konecranes.

This is an environmentally friendly machine, featuring advanced lithium-ion battery technology and an energy management system that monitors the charge level and overall battery condition. It is powered by an eco-efficient diesel engine that charges the batteries as needed. This system reduces diesel consumption by half compared to conventional RTGs.

This Investment Plan demonstrates CSP Valencia’s firm commitment to the port as a strategic center on the western Mediterranean coast for handling import and export cargo generated in its area of influence, as well as transshipment traffic.

CSP Iberian Valencia Terminal is the largest public container terminal in Spain, with an operating capacity of 3.5M TEUs.

CSP Spain, whose activity as a container stevedoring company in the port of Valencia dates back to 1973, belongs to the CSPL Group, the world’s largest port operator. This business group has more than 46 container terminals worldwide and handles a global volume of over 90 million TEUs.
